I may be a bit biased, but I think Finnish knitwear designers have some gorgeous patterns. Unfortunately for non-Finnish speakers, these patterns are often not available in English or other languages. (Except Niina Laitinen’s Knitted Socks is coming out on December 19!) Using a translation tool doesn’t work well for Finnish, and even less for knitting terms. I can’t help much with the other languages, but I’ve gathered Finnish knitting terms and their English translations here to help you.
NOTE: The word “neulo,” conjugated from “neuloa,” is the general term for knitting. It does not automatically double for the knit stitch in English. Many instructions will start with “neulo,” meaning it is advising you to knit whatever the next words advise. This does not mean that the stitches will necessarily be knit stitches. To avoid having all definitions under N, I have dropped “neulo” from most terms.
Also, Å, Ä, and Ö are separate and distinct letters and appear at the end of the alphabet.
