Rates for Commissions

Knitting, crocheting, embroidery, and all other handicrafts are forms of art. They take time and skill to create. The hard part about pricing a knitted item is figuring out how to set rates so that the pricing is fair for every customer, as well as the knitter, and allows for accurate quotes before starting the project so there are no surprises.

Let’s consider something like three times the cost of the yarn:

  • This method enables the knitter to quote an accurate price before starting the project
  • Two garments from the same pattern can cost significantly different amounts depending on the yarn
  • It takes the knitter the same amount of time to make them

Another option is based on the time it takes to knit the garment:

  • The actual amount of time spent isn’t known until the project is done
  • Making a specific pattern the first time often takes longer as the knitter figures out the details
  • Subsequent knits of the same pattern take less time, meaning the cost would be less for the same garment for the second and third customer

Autumn Eden Goodman, who runs the Size Inclusive Collective on Instagram, introduced me to a new way of pricing that combines the best of both options: By the yard.

  • It’s possible to provide an accurate quote before starting the project
  • The cost is the same regardless of the price of the yarn
  • The cost is the same regardless of how long it takes

With all that being said, here are my rates:
