Hol(e)y Socks

I recently tried my hand at darning my socks. These are my favorite pair, and it’s one of the first pairs I knit when I really got into knitting a few years ago. They’ve gotten so much use that the heels and balls had worn down.

I used this as an opportunity to test out a few different darning techniques. I had brought back a wooden darning mushroom from Finland last summer, and it finally got used. The results aren’t the prettiest I’ve ever seen, but I didn’t expect much out of my first try, either.

Considering I knit these socks in November of 2019 and would wear them very frequently, they held up quite well. One of the reasons for this is that the yarn they’re made from is reinforced with polyamide. While wool by itself is a durable fiber, anything that gets rubbed against hard surfaces is bound to wear through eventually. Using a yarn with a reinforcement fiber for things like socks means they’ll last a bit longer before they need repair.

I’ve mentioned before that I miss the yarns available in Finland, and I’ve finally decided to do something about it. I’ve made an inventory order and have opened up my own webshop selling yarn from Finland.
